Apple's iPhone Duo may end up selling more Galaxy Z Fold 8s

Apple's first foldable isn't on shelves yet, but the buzz around it already seems to be lifting interest in Samsung's foldables.

Apple finally showed off its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, and it won't even reach stores until next month. Yet the announcement alone has put foldables back in the spotlight, and Samsung, which has been making them since the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, could be the surprise winner.

Foldables are still a tiny slice of the market. IDC estimates about 20.6 million were shipped last year, compared with roughly 1.25 billion smartphones overall. Apple's entry could be the push the category needs to go mainstream.

Early signs point that way: reports suggest Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales picked up after the Duo reveal. Some buyers may simply be curious about foldables for the first time, while enthusiasts might want to try one before Apple's version arrives. Samsung has already trimmed foldable prices in some markets to make the most of the moment.

The bigger takeaway is familiar: more competition usually means better phones and better prices for buyers, and other brands will now have to raise their game too.
